Custom Wood Millwork in Washington, DC

Estate Millwork is the manufacturer, not a local showroom. We build custom hardwood doors, shutters, and cabinet doors to order in our Pennsylvania workshop and ship them directly across Washington, DC and the surrounding neighborhoods. Because everything is made to your dimensions, we work naturally with the openings you actually have — the tall, narrow entry of a Capitol Hill Victorian rowhouse, the Federal-style front door of a Georgetown townhouse, or the exact profile a historic district or the Old Georgetown Board requires.

Millwork for DC's rowhouses, Federal townhouses, and Wardmans

Washington's residential fabric is defined by the rowhouse: block after block of Victorian bay-fronts and turrets in Capitol Hill, Dupont Circle, Logan Circle, and Shaw; the porch-fronted Wardman rows of the 1910s and 1920s across Petworth, Columbia Heights, and Bloomingdale; and the Federal and Georgian brick townhouses of Georgetown and Old Town–adjacent blocks that predate the Civil War. Many of these homes are a century or more old, and generations of humid summers and settling brick mean the openings rarely stayed square — original door frames lean, and stock doors and shutters seldom close cleanly against them. Because we build every piece to the measurements you provide, we can match an existing rail-and-stile proportion, reproduce a moulding profile taken off an original, or hold a tight sightline in an opening that has shifted over the decades. If your home sits in a DC historic district under the Historic Preservation Review Board — or in Georgetown, where exterior changes go before the Old Georgetown Board and the Commission of Fine Arts — send us the district's requirement or the profile and we will build doors and shutters that read correctly for the period rather than forcing a catalog part onto a protected elevation.

Choosing wood for DC's climate

Washington sits in a humid-subtropical band, and its weather is hard on exterior millwork in a very particular way: long, hot, punishingly humid summers that swell and cup untreated wood, heavy rain, and a winter that still cycles above and below freezing enough to work moisture into any joint that isn't built for it — while interior pieces sit in dry, forced-air heated air from December through February. The right species depends on the application. For exterior doors and shutters we most often recommend Spanish Cedar, Mahogany, White Oak, and Western Red Cedar for their stability and natural resistance to rot in high humidity; for interior doors and cabinet doors, Cherry, Walnut, Maple, and Poplar give you the grain and paintability most DC interiors want. Every board is kiln-dried to a stable moisture content before milling so the piece holds its shape through the swing between a swampy August and a dry January.

Getting large millwork into a DC home

Delivery in the District is its own problem, and it is worth planning before you order. A Capitol Hill or Shaw rowhouse with a narrow front stoop and no driveway, a Georgetown townhouse on a tight cobblestone block, a Wharf or Navy Yard high-rise condo that requires a certificate of insurance and a reserved freight elevator, or a home whose only practical loading point is a rear alley all change how a piece needs to be sized, crated, and scheduled. Street loading in much of the city needs a parking permit, and the historic blocks leave little room to maneuver a large crate. Tell us the access situation up front — we can advise on panel sizes that will make the turn, crate for the carrier your building or HOA allows, and coordinate the ship date so your finished millwork arrives when you can actually receive it.
