ESTATE MILLWORK · SAVANNAH, GA

Custom Wood Millwork in Savannah, GA

Estate Millwork is the manufacturer, not a local showroom. We build custom hardwood doors, shutters, and cabinet doors to order in our Pennsylvania workshop and ship them directly across Savannah and the surrounding Lowcountry. Because everything is made to your dimensions, we work naturally with the openings you actually have — the tall parlor-floor doorways of a Federal-style townhouse on a downtown square, the raised entry of an Italianate rowhouse, or the exact louver spacing a home in the Landmark Historic District calls for.

Millwork for Savannah's townhouses, cottages, and historic squares

Savannah's historic core is one of the largest intact collections of pre-Civil War architecture in the country — the roughly 2.5-square-mile Landmark Historic District laid out on Oglethorpe's ward-and-square plan, lined with Federal, Greek Revival, and Italianate townhouses of brick and stucco, many raised a full story over an English basement with a tall parlor floor above. Beyond the squares, the Victorian District is full of Queen Anne and gingerbread wood-frame homes, and neighborhoods like Ardsley Park and the Starland District add 1910s–1920s bungalows and side-hall cottages. These buildings have stood through more than a century of coastal settling and humidity, and their openings have rarely stayed square — stock doors and shutters seldom fit them cleanly. Because we build every piece to the measurements you provide, we can match an original rail-and-stile proportion, reproduce a moulding profile off a surviving piece, or hold a clean sightline in an opening that has shifted. If your home falls under the Historic District or Victorian District review guidelines, send us the profile or the requirement and we will build doors and shutters that read correctly for the period instead of forcing a catalog part onto a protected elevation.

Choosing wood for Savannah's coastal climate

Few climates test exterior millwork the way Savannah's does: long hot-humid subtropical summers, salt air carried in off the Atlantic and the tidal marshes, heavy seasonal rain and tropical-storm exposure, intense UV, and a serious wood-destroying-insect load — coastal Georgia sits squarely in termite country. Wood here lives in near-constant moisture, so rot resistance and dimensional stability matter more than almost anywhere. For exterior doors and shutters we most often recommend Spanish Cedar, Mahogany, White Oak, and Western Red Cedar for their natural decay and insect resistance and their stability in humid, salt-laden air — the same qualities that make Bahama and louvered shutters such a natural fit for shading a Lowcountry facade. For interior doors and cabinet doors, Cherry, Walnut, Maple, and Poplar give you the grain and paintability Savannah interiors want. Every board is kiln-dried to a stable moisture content before milling so the piece holds its shape through the swing between a saturated August and a cooler, drier January.

Getting large millwork into a Savannah building

Delivery downtown is its own problem, and it is worth planning before you order. A tall Historic District townhouse with a high stoop to the parlor floor and no elevator, the tight one-way streets and limited loading around the squares, a downtown condo building that requires a certificate of insurance, or a home that receives deliveries off one of Savannah's rear service lanes all change how a piece needs to be sized, crated, and scheduled — as do the gated communities on Skidaway Island and out toward the Landings, where access has to be arranged in advance. Tell us the access situation up front — we can advise on panel sizes that will make the turn, crate for the carrier your building or community allows, and coordinate the ship date so your finished millwork arrives when you can actually receive it.
