Millwork for Philadelphia's rowhouses, trinities, and stone twins
Philadelphia is a rowhouse city built in brick and stone over three centuries, and the openings reflect it. Federal and Georgian rowhouses in Society Hill and Old City, the compact three-story "trinity" houses of the colonial core and Kensington, wide Victorian twins and porch-front rows in West Philadelphia, and the Wissahickon-schist houses of Chestnut Hill, Mount Airy, and Germantown all carry proportions and moulding profiles that stock doors and shutters simply do not fit. Decades of settling on tight urban lots leave most of these openings out of square, and the older the wall, the truer that is. Choosing wood for Philadelphia's climate
Philadelphia sits in the humid mid-Atlantic, and exterior millwork here has to take everything the seasons throw at it: hot, sticky summers that swell wood, cold winters with repeated freeze-thaw cycling, heavy year-round rain, and the driving wet of nor'easters — while interior pieces spend winter in dry, forced-air heat. The right species depends on the job. For exterior doors and shutters we most often recommend Spanish Cedar, Mahogany, White Oak, and Western Red Cedar for their stability and natural weather resistance; for interior doors and cabinet doors, Cherry, Walnut, Maple, and Poplar give you the grain and paintability most Philadelphia interiors want. Every board is kiln-dried to a stable moisture content before milling, so the finished piece holds its shape through the swing between a humid August and a raw January.
Getting large millwork into a Philadelphia building
Delivery in the city is its own problem, and it is worth planning before you order.
