Millwork for Scottsdale’s desert and Territorial homes
Scottsdale’s architecture is unlike almost anywhere else we ship to. Old Town keeps its low, adobe-walled Territorial and Old West character; McCormick Ranch and Gainey Ranch are full of Spanish Colonial Revival and ranch homes with arched, deeply recessed entries and heavy carved doors; and the foothills of North Scottsdale hold both Al Beadle–era mid-century desert modernism and today’s organic contemporary custom builds that take their cues from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West just up the road.
Stock catalog sizes rarely suit any of them. Because we build every piece to the measurements you provide, we can match a carved Spanish entry, hold the long clean sightline a desert-modern elevation wants, or reproduce the plank-and-batten look of a Territorial ranch. If your property falls under the Scottsdale Historic Preservation Commission, send us the requirement and we will build doors and shutters that read correctly for the period instead of forcing a stock part onto a protected elevation.
Choosing wood for extreme heat, sun, and dry air
Scottsdale’s climate is the opposite of the humid problem most of the country has. Bone-dry single-digit humidity for much of the year, some of the most intense UV in the country, 110-degree summers, and a monsoon season that whips dust and sudden rain across everything all pull moisture out of wood and make cheaply built, over-wide panels shrink, check, and split. Species choice and drying matter even more here than in wet climates.
For exterior doors and shutters sitting in that sun, we most often recommend Spanish Cedar, Mahogany, White Oak, and Western Red Cedar for their stability and natural resistance — paired with a UV-grade exterior finish that is worth re-coating on the sun-blasted south and west elevations. For interiors, held in dry conditioned air year-round, Cherry, Walnut, Maple, and Poplar give you the grain and paintability most Scottsdale homes want. Every board is kiln-dried to a stable, low moisture content and built with panels free to move, so the finished piece holds its shape through the desert’s wide day-to-night swing.
Getting custom millwork to your Scottsdale project
Delivery across the Valley is worth planning before you order. Much of Scottsdale’s best work sits behind a guard gate — Gainey Ranch, DC Ranch, Silverleaf — where the carrier needs a name on the list, a certificate of insurance, and a scheduled window; a custom build in the North Scottsdale foothills may be down a long desert-access drive with limited staging; and an Old Town renovation can mean a tight lot and restricted hours. Tell us the access and site situation up front and we will size panels that make the turn, crate for the heat and the long haul from Pennsylvania, and time the ship date so your finished millwork arrives when the site is ready to receive it — not baking on a driveway in July.
