ESTATE MILLWORK · SAN DIEGO, CA
Custom Wood Millwork in San Diego, CA
Estate Millwork is the manufacturer, not a local showroom. We build custom hardwood doors, shutters, and cabinet doors to order in our Pennsylvania workshop and ship them directly across the San Diego region — from the historic canyon neighborhoods above downtown out to the coast and North County. Because everything is made to your dimensions, we work naturally with the openings you actually have: the arched, stucco-framed doorway of a Mission Hills Spanish Colonial Revival house, the deep front porch of a Burlingame Craftsman bungalow in North Park, or the tall bay windows of a Victorian in Sherman Heights or Golden Hill.

Millwork for San Diego’s Spanish Revival and Craftsman homes
San Diego’s most characterful housing predates modern standardization: the Spanish Colonial Revival and Mission Revival homes that spread out of Balboa Park after the 1915 Panama–California Exposition, the Craftsman bungalows of Burlingame, Kensington, and Mission Hills, and the Victorian and Queen Anne houses of Sherman Heights, Golden Hill, and the Gaslamp Quarter downtown. Stock sizes rarely fit these openings. Because we build every piece to the measurements you provide, we can match an existing rail-and-stile proportion, reproduce a moulding profile, or hold a tight sightline in an arched, plaster-set opening. If your home is a designated resource or sits in a local historic district — Sherman Heights, Burlingame, Marston Hills, or the Gaslamp Quarter — exterior changes to designated properties are reviewed by the City of San Diego Historical Resources Board, which issues a Certificate of Appropriateness before work proceeds. Send us the district’s requirement and we will build doors and shutters that read correctly for the period instead of forcing a stock catalog part onto a protected elevation.
Choosing wood for San Diego’s marine air and coastal sun
San Diego trades hard seasons for a steady, salt-laden one: a damp marine layer that hangs over the coast through the “May Gray” and “June Gloom” months, intense year-round UV that fades and checks unprotected wood, dry Santa Ana winds that pull moisture out of everything, and a real humidity gap between a foggy Point Loma morning and a bone-dry Escondido afternoon — conditions that stress exterior millwork and swing interior wood between damp and conditioned air. The right species depends on the application. For exterior doors and shutters we most often recommend Spanish Cedar, Mahogany, White Oak, and Western Red Cedar for their natural rot resistance and dimensional stability in salt air; for interior doors and cabinet doors, Cherry, Walnut, Maple, and Poplar give you the grain and paintability most San Diego interiors want. Every board is kiln-dried to a stable moisture content before milling so the finished piece holds its shape through a foggy coastal winter and a dry Santa Ana in the fall.
Getting custom millwork to your San Diego project
San Diego County is spread across a wide, coast-to-canyon footprint, and delivery is worth planning before you order — we ship from Pennsylvania to the far southwest corner of the country, so lead time and site access both matter. A tight canyon lot in Mission Hills or Bankers Hill, a general contractor coordinating trades on a La Jolla or Coronado renovation, or a new build up the coast in Carlsbad, Encinitas, or inland Escondido each change how a piece should be sized, crated, and scheduled — and getting onto Coronado means planning the delivery around the bridge. Tell us the access and site situation up front — we can advise on panel sizes that will make the turn, crate for the carrier your job site allows, and time the ship date so your finished millwork arrives when the site is ready to receive it.
