Millwork for Portland's Craftsman and Victorian neighborhoods
Portland wears its early-twentieth-century architecture on almost every close-in street. The Old Portland Craftsman bungalow — low-slung, with deep bracketed eaves, exposed rafter tails, and a broad front porch — is the signature house of Alameda, Laurelhurst, and Eastmoreland, while Irvington fills its blocks with foursquares and the boxy, dignified Prairie and Colonial Revival homes that earned the neighborhood a place on the National Register. A few blocks southeast, Ladd's Addition keeps its diagonal streets lined with Queen Anne and later Victorian houses whose tall windows and turned detail set a very different tone. Stock millwork sizes rarely fit any of it. Because we build every door, shutter, and cabinet door to the measurements you send us, we can match an existing rail-and-stile proportion, hold the wide flat casing a bungalow expects, or reproduce a period profile rather than forcing a catalog part onto a house that predates catalog parts. If your home sits in one of the city's designated historic or conservation districts — Ladd's Addition, Irvington, or the Alameda and Laurelhurst areas among them — exterior alterations run through Historic Resource Review by the Portland Historic Landmarks Commission at the Bureau of Development Services; send us that requirement and we will build doors and shutters that read correctly for the period instead of dropping a stock catalog part onto a protected elevation.
Choosing wood for Portland's wet, mild climate
Portland's weather is the opposite of a hard-freeze climate: long, damp, mild winters, months of rain-driven moisture, and enough shade and canopy that north-facing millwork stays wet and can grow moss. The temperatures rarely swing hard, so the enemy here is standing moisture and rot rather than freeze-thaw. For exterior doors and shutters that face that exposure, we most often recommend the naturally rot-resistant species — Western Red Cedar, Port Orford and Spanish Cedar, Cypress, White Oak, and Mahogany — because their density and natural oils shed the wet Willamette Valley winter far better than a softwood stock unit. For interior doors and cabinet doors, quartersawn White Oak, Cherry, Walnut, Maple, and Poplar give you the grain and paintability that Portland's Craftsman and bungalow interiors were built around. Every board is kiln-dried to a stable moisture content before milling so the finished piece holds its shape through a wet January and a dry August.
