Millwork for Pittsburgh's rowhouses, foursquares, and hillside Victorians
Pittsburgh's housing stock is old, dense, and built into its hills. Brick rowhouses line Lawrenceville, the South Side Slopes, and Bloomfield; big frame foursquares and Tudors fill Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, and Point Breeze; and the North Side holds some of the country's largest concentrations of intact Victorians in the Mexican War Streets, Manchester, Allegheny West, and Deutschtown historic districts. Most of these homes were built between the 1870s and the 1920s, and a century of hillside settling — and in some neighborhoods, old coal-mine subsidence — means their openings have rarely stayed square. Stock doors and shutters seldom fit them cleanly. Because we build every piece to the measurements you provide, we can match an existing rail-and-stile proportion, reproduce a moulding profile taken off an original, or hold a tight sightline in a doorway that has shifted over the decades. Choosing wood for Pittsburgh's climate
Pittsburgh is one of the cloudiest, wettest big cities in the country: long gray winters with hard freeze-thaw cycling, humid summers, heavy annual rainfall, and river-valley moisture rolling off the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio. That standing dampness is what tests exterior millwork here — while interior pieces sit in heated, furnace-dry winter air. The right species depends on the application. For exterior doors and shutters we most often recommend Spanish Cedar, Mahogany, White Oak, and Western Red Cedar for their rot resistance and dimensional stability in a damp climate; for interior doors and cabinet doors, Cherry, Walnut, Maple, and Poplar give you the grain and paintability most Pittsburgh interiors want. Every board is kiln-dried to a stable moisture content before milling so the piece holds its shape through the swing between a raw, wet February and a humid July.
Getting large millwork into a Pittsburgh building
Delivery in Pittsburgh is its own problem, and it is worth planning before you order.
