Las Vegas has a shorter architectural history than the East Coast but a distinctive one. The John S. Park Historic District — the city's first neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places — is lined with 1930s and 40s Spanish Revival, Mission, and Tudor cottages whose arched openings and heavy plank doors were built long before stock sizes standardized. Across the valley, desert-contemporary and Southwest Territorial homes in Summerlin, Henderson, and The Ridges lean on clean-lined flat-panel doors, deep shading overhangs, and operable shutters. Because we build every piece to the measurements you provide, we can reproduce a period arched door for a John S. Park bungalow or cut a crisp, minimal flat-panel entry for a modern desert home — matching a stile-and-rail proportion or a moulding profile exactly rather than forcing a catalog part onto a wall it was never made for.
Choosing wood for the Mojave Desert's heat and aridity
Southern Nevada is one of the harshest climates in the country for exterior wood — summer highs well over 100°F, single-digit humidity, and relentless UV that bleaches and checks finishes faster than almost anywhere else. Extreme dryness is the real enemy here: it pulls moisture out of wood and opens joints, the opposite of the swelling you fight in humid climates. Species choice matters. For exterior doors and shutters in the desert we most often recommend Spanish Cedar, Mahogany, and White Oak for their stability, plus Western Red Cedar for shutters that shade west- and south-facing glass — and every exterior piece should carry a UV-rated finish that gets re-coated on schedule. For interior doors and cabinet doors, living in conditioned, bone-dry air year-round, Cherry, Walnut, Maple, and Alder hold beautifully. Every board is kiln-dried to a stable, low moisture content before milling so the finished piece is built for desert dryness rather than fighting it.
