Those conditions swell and shrink exterior millwork through the year and swing interior wood between humid outdoor air and heated, conditioned rooms. The right species depends on the job. For exterior doors and shutters we most often recommend Spanish Cedar, Mahogany, White Oak, and Western Red Cedar for their natural rot resistance and dimensional stability in that kind of moisture; for interior doors and cabinet doors, Cherry, Walnut, Maple, and Poplar give you the grain and paintability most Knoxville interiors want. Every board is kiln-dried to a stable moisture content before milling so the finished piece holds its shape through a soaking July and a dry, heated January.
