Millwork for Cincinnati’s historic hill and river neighborhoods
Cincinnati holds one of the largest surviving collections of 19th-century Italianate architecture in the country, and Over-the-Rhine — a National Historic Landmark district — is its heart: tall, narrow brick rowhouses with bracketed cornices, segmental-arch window hoods, and doorways that predate any modern standard size. Choosing wood for the Ohio Valley’s freeze-thaw and humidity
Cincinnati sits in the Ohio River valley and takes the full swing of a continental climate: humid, storm-heavy summers, hard freeze-thaw winters that cycle above and below freezing again and again, and river-valley damp that lingers in spring and fall. Those repeated moisture and temperature swings are exactly what split, cup, and rot exterior millwork over time, and they push interior wood between muggy summer air and dry, furnace-heated winter air. The right species depends on the application. For exterior doors and shutters we most often recommend Spanish Cedar, Mahogany, White Oak, and Western Red Cedar for their natural rot resistance and dimensional stability through the freeze-thaw cycle; for interior doors and cabinet doors, Cherry, Walnut, Maple, and Poplar give you the grain and paintability most Cincinnati interiors want. Every board is kiln-dried to a stable moisture content before milling so the finished piece holds its shape from a humid August on the river to a dry, radiator-heated January on the hill.
