Charlotte's oldest fabric sits in its trolley-era neighborhoods: the deep-porch Craftsman bungalows and Queen Anne cottages of Dilworth, the sweeping Colonial, Georgian, and Tudor Revival houses laid out under the oaks of Myers Park, the restored Second Empire and Queen Anne homes of Fourth Ward, and the eclectic early-1900s stock of Elizabeth and Plaza Midwood. Many of these houses are eighty to a hundred and twenty years old, and decades of Piedmont clay heave and humidity mean their openings have rarely stayed square. Because we build every piece to the measurements you provide, we can match an existing rail-and-stile proportion, reproduce a moulding profile off an original, or hold a clean sightline in a door or window that has shifted over the years. Choosing wood for Charlotte's climate
Charlotte's humid subtropical climate is hard on exterior millwork in its own way: long, hot summers with high humidity and intense sun, heavy Piedmont thunderstorms, the soaking rains that trail up from Gulf and Atlantic tropical systems, and the occasional winter ice storm — all of which drive moisture into and out of exposed wood month after month, while interior pieces sit in air-conditioned, heated houses. The right species depends on the application. For exterior doors and shutters we most often recommend Spanish Cedar, Mahogany, White Oak, and Western Red Cedar for their natural rot resistance and dimensional stability in high humidity; for interior doors and cabinet doors, Cherry, Walnut, Maple, and Poplar give you the grain and paintability most Charlotte interiors want. Every board is kiln-dried to a stable moisture content before milling so the piece holds its shape through the swing between a muggy August and a dry, heated January.
