Choosing wood for the mountain climate
Asheville's climate is hard on exterior woodwork in its own particular way: damp, humid mountain air that lingers in the coves, heavy rainfall, and a real freeze-thaw cycle at elevation that swells and shrinks a poorly chosen door through every winter. The right species depends on the application. For exterior doors and shutters exposed to that damp and that swing, we most often recommend Spanish Cedar, White Oak, Mahogany, and Western Red Cedar for their natural rot resistance and dimensional stability; for interior doors and cabinet doors in a heated mountain home, Cherry, Walnut, Maple, and Poplar give you the grain and paintability Asheville interiors tend to want. Every board is kiln-dried to a stable moisture content before milling, so the finished piece holds its shape through the wet spring and the dry, wood-stove winter rather than cupping or sticking.
Delivering custom millwork to Asheville
