The Right Species for Outdoor Work
- Cypress — Southern bald cypress, the raised-bed, planter and porch wood: naturally rot-resistant, untreated, safe around food crops.
- Spanish Cedar — aromatic, insect-resistant, holds paint; planters, trellises and exterior millwork.
- Teak — the marine standard for benches and anything that stays wet.
- White Oak — the rot-resistant hardwood for garden gates, arbors and heavy outdoor furniture.
How Much Lumber a Raised Bed Takes
A 4 ft × 8 ft bed, 11" tall, built from 2×6 boards takes about 48 board feet (two courses of two 8 ft and two 4 ft boards, plus corner posts). A 4 × 4 bed takes about 32 BF; a 3 × 6 planter box with a floor about 30 BF. Enter the total in the designer and the price updates live. Boards ship random width at 8 ft; for boards dressed to an exact size, use dimensional Cypress.
Pergolas, Trellises and Arbors

Ordering and Shipping
No minimum. Lumber ships from our Meyersdale, Pennsylvania mill in one to two weeks by UPS, FedEx or LTL freight; 500 BF and up prices as bulk.
