Random-width, 8 ft rough sawn boards sized to the board feet you enter.
Estate Millwork buys American Black Walnut for our furniture-grade door and cabinet work, and sells the same stock in thick 8/4 (two-inch) rough sawn boards by the board foot. Enter the board feet you need and add to cart, or ask us to pull extra-wide, long or figured billets.
8/4 is the go-to thickness when 4/4 is too thin: gunstock blanks, instrument and neck billets, table legs and thick aprons, cutting boards, and one-slab live-edge tops. Rough sawn leaves the full thickness for you to resaw or surface to your finished dimension.
About Our 8/4 Walnut
- American Black Walnut ( Juglans nigra ) — Appalachian and Midwestern stock
- Full 8/4 rough — a nominal two inches before surfacing, leaving room to resaw or plane to final thickness
- Rich chocolate-brown heartwood that needs no stain, only a clear finish
- Janka hardness 1,010 — hard enough to wear well, stable enough to hold a straight billet
- Kiln-dried to 6–8% moisture content; among the most dimensionally stable domestic hardwoods
- Sapwood is pale — expect some in wider boards; steamed stock is available on request
8/4 is our most requested thickness for gunstocks and instrument billets, where straight, stable, thick stock matters.
What Builders Make from 8/4 Walnut
- Gunstocks — the traditional American stock wood: strong, stable and figured
- Instrument billets — necks, blanks and turned bodies that stay straight
- Thick furniture parts — legs, aprons, stretchers and bench tops
- Live-edge slabs — single-board tops and shelves in full thickness
- Turnings and carving — blanks that machine cleanly and hold detail
Grade, Thickness and Board-Foot Pricing
Our 8/4 Walnut is #1 Common and better, kiln-dried to 6–8%, and sold by the board foot — one board foot is 144 cubic inches, so a 12×12×2″ board is two board feet. Extra-wide or figured billets, gunstock blanks, long boards and truckload quantities are quoted on request through the form below.
