Design Your Western Red Cedar Rattan Door in every species we mill
Each render is the actual door geometry in that wood. Open one to configure it at your size and see the live price.
The frame is milled from solid western red cedar — stiles and rails joined with true mortise-and-tenon construction — and the panels are woven cane rattan set into a grooved frame, so the door ventilates a closet or pantry while keeping its contents out of sight. Rattan is a sub-style of our Custom door type: the designer above opens on it with this species selected.
CUSTOM WESTERN RED CEDAR CUSTOM DOORS · MADE TO SPECIFICATION IN PENNSYLVANIA
Western Red Cedar Custom Doors, Built to Your Specifications
Western Red Cedar custom doors are built to your exact specifications, showcasing the wood's warm reddish-brown heartwood with distinctive cedar scent in whatever design you envision. Whether you need an oversized entry door, a curved-top interior door, or a specialty configuration that no standard product line offers, Western Red Cedar provides the workability and beauty to bring your vision to life. The straight, tight grain with fine texture and aromatic scent adapts beautifully to any door style or panel configuration. One of the highest thermal resistance values of any wood. Our custom door program starts with your dimensions and design requirements, and our engineers translate them into precise machining programs that produce a perfect Western Red Cedar door every time.
Why Western Red Cedar for custom doors
Custom doors exist because standard sizes and styles cannot fit every opening or match every vision. Western Red Cedar is particularly well suited to custom work because its straight, tight grain with fine texture and aromatic scent machines predictably and holds detail well across non-standard dimensions. Lightest species — ideal for large format mounting. For finishing, Western Red Cedar takes both paint and semi-transparent stains beautifully. From concept to delivery, our custom Western Red Cedar doors receive the same attention to material selection, machining precision, and assembly quality that we apply to every product in our lineup.
About our Western Red Cedar
Our Western Red Cedar is sourced from Pacific Northwest forests of the US and British Columbia and arrives at our Pennsylvania mill as kiln-dried stock with moisture content between 6-8%. Western Red Cedar rates 350 lbf Janka on the Janka hardness scale, classifying it as a very lightweight softwood — the lightest in our lineup. The natural warm reddish-brown heartwood with distinctive cedar scent develops character over time as the wood responds to light and air. In terms of decay resistance, Western Red Cedar offers Class 2 durability — natural thujaplicins resist rot, decay, and insects. Aromatic scent persists for years in enclosed spaces. We hand-select each board for straight grain, minimal defects, and consistent color before it enters our production process.
Machining & hand joinery
Working with Western Red Cedar in our shop requires specific knowledge of how this species behaves under tooling. The straight, tight grain with fine texture and aromatic scent responds well to our CNC routers and shapers, producing clean profiles with minimal sanding. Every joint in our Western Red Cedar products uses true mortise-and-tenon construction — no pocket screws, no biscuits, no dowels. Traditional siding and shingle wood of the american west coast. We apply waterproof adhesive at every joint and reinforce critical connections with hardwood pegs. The result is a product built to outlast the building it adorns. For finishing, Western Red Cedar takes both paint and semi-transparent stains beautifully.
Performance & finishing
Western Red Cedar is especially popular among homeowners and architects who value One of the highest thermal resistance values of any wood. In terms of climate performance, Western Red Cedar performs well in naturally weather-resistant without chemical treatment. Every Western Red Cedar product we build is backed by our commitment to quality: premium kiln-dried lumber, precision CNC machining, hand assembly, and a 150-grit final sand ready for your chosen finish. Lightest species — ideal for large format mounting. Whether you are building new or renovating, Western Red Cedar delivers a level of material quality and natural beauty that manufactured alternatives simply cannot replicate. Applications and Configurations
Solid custom doors suit closets, pantries, laundry and utility rooms, bathrooms, passages and room dividers. Depending on style and hardware they can be hung as hinged, pocket, sliding, bypass or paired doors, in single or double configurations. The designer above shows the valid sizes, jamb types and options for this build.
Interior and Exterior Specifications
Interior applications allow the widest material and finish selection. Exterior or high-humidity openings require an appropriate durable species or exterior-rated material, compatible adhesive and finish, and detailing suited to the exposure. Contact Estate Millwork when climate or coastal conditions affect the specification.
Material, Grain and Finish Selection
Choose paint-grade or stain-grade construction according to the material. Western Red Cedar is conditioned for stable fabrication, then selected for color and grain consistency; matching and sequencing can be discussed for prominent multi-piece installations. Responsible-sourcing options can be quoted when certification is required.
