Sapele rattan doors

The frame is milled from solid sapele — stiles and rails joined with true mortise-and-tenon construction — and the panels are woven cane rattan set into a grooved frame, so the door ventilates a closet or pantry while keeping its contents out of sight. Rattan is a sub-style of our Custom door type: the designer above opens on it with this species selected.

Why Sapele for custom doors

Custom doors exist because standard sizes and styles cannot fit every opening or match every vision. Sapele is particularly well suited to custom work because its interlocked grain with distinctive ribbon-stripe figure when quartersawn machines predictably and holds detail well across non-standard dimensions. Increasingly specified as mahogany alternative. For finishing, Sapele develops rich deep luster with oil or varnish; ribbon-stripe becomes more dramatic. From concept to delivery, our custom Sapele doors receive the same attention to material selection, machining precision, and assembly quality that we apply to every product in our lineup.

About our Sapele

Our Sapele is sourced from tropical West and Central African forests and arrives at our Pennsylvania mill as kiln-dried stock with moisture content between 6-8%. Sapele rates 1,410 lbf Janka on the Janka hardness scale, classifying it as a dense, heavy hardwood. The natural medium to dark reddish-brown, similar to Mahogany with more pronounced figure develops character over time as the wood responds to light and air. In terms of decay resistance, Sapele offers Class 2-3 durability — good natural resistance comparable to genuine Mahogany. Develops a rich deep luster with clear finishes. We hand-select each board for straight grain, minimal defects, and consistent color before it enters our production process.

Machining & hand joinery

Working with Sapele in our shop requires specific knowledge of how this species behaves under tooling. The interlocked grain with distinctive ribbon-stripe figure when quartersawn responds well to our CNC routers and shapers, producing clean profiles with minimal sanding. Every joint in our Sapele products uses true mortise-and-tenon construction — no pocket screws, no biscuits, no dowels. Harder and more dent-resistant than mahogany. We apply waterproof adhesive at every joint and reinforce critical connections with hardwood pegs. The result is a product built to outlast the building it adorns. For finishing, Sapele develops rich deep luster with oil or varnish; ribbon-stripe becomes more dramatic.

Performance & finishing

Sapele is especially popular among homeowners and architects who value Ribbon-stripe pattern shifts with viewing angle. In terms of climate performance, Sapele performs well in well suited for both interior and exterior applications. Every Sapele product we build is backed by our commitment to quality: premium kiln-dried lumber, precision CNC machining, hand assembly, and a 150-grit final sand ready for your chosen finish. Increasingly specified as mahogany alternative. Whether you are building new or renovating, Sapele delivers a level of material quality and natural beauty that manufactured alternatives simply cannot replicate. Interior and Exterior Specifications

Interior applications allow the widest material and finish selection. Contact Estate Millwork when climate or coastal conditions affect the specification.

Material, Grain and Finish Selection

Choose paint-grade or stain-grade construction according to the material. Sapele is conditioned for stable fabrication, then selected for color and grain consistency; matching and sequencing can be discussed for prominent multi-piece installations.
