The rattan door is one of the most recognizable notes in coastal and British-Colonial design: a warm, woven cane-look field framed by clean solid stiles and rails. Real Hardwood, Not Woven Reed

Off-the-shelf "rattan" doors are usually a lightweight frame with a panel of glued natural cane webbing stretched across an opening. It photographs well and fails quickly — the reed dries, loosens and tears, and the hollow frame racks. Our rattan doors are solid hardwood throughout. The woven pattern is machined into a solid wood field, so there is nothing to stretch, sag or unravel. The result reads as rattan from across the room and behaves like the furniture-grade door it is.

Because the whole door is real wood, you choose the species the way you would for any fine door. Paint grade: Poplar is our most affordable solid option and takes paint beautifully for a crisp white or color-matched coastal look. Stain-grade hardwoods: Mahogany, Cherry, Walnut, Maple, Sapele, Red Oak and White Oak each bring their own grain and tone. Rot-resistant, coastal and exterior: Spanish Cedar, Teak, Cypress and Western Red Cedar stand up to humidity and covered-exterior exposure. Knotty Alder adds a relaxed, rustic character. Each species is milled from FAS clear-grade stock to an 8% moisture standard.

Choosing a species for your room

For a painted interior door, Poplar delivers a flawless finish at the best price. For a stained statement door in a great room or primary suite, Mahogany and Walnut are hard to beat. For a beach house, lanai, pool bath or any humid room, choose Spanish Cedar, Teak or Cypress and finish the door for its environment. Construction & Quality

Every rattan door uses traditional rail-and-stile construction with solid hardwood components joined by deep-pocket mortise-and-tenon joinery — the same method master craftsmen have used for centuries because it produces the strongest, flattest, longest-lived door. We hand-joint each board for a true flat edge, build to the nearest sixteenth of an inch, and offer unfinished, primed, painted and stained finishes. Interior and exterior construction are both available; exterior doors are built and finished for UV and weather exposure with sealed top and bottom edges.

How to measure

For a replacement, measure the existing slab width and height at three points each and use the smallest reading. For new framing, give us the rough opening. Standard interior widths are 24, 28, 30, 32 and 36 inches and standard height is 80 inches, but every rattan door is custom — we build to your exact dimension, not a stock size.
