What Makes a Shutter a Farmhouse Shutter

Farmhouse style is board and batten: flat vertical boards edge-joined and held by horizontal battens, with or without a diagonal Z-brace. It is the oldest exterior shutter form in America, the one on stone farmhouses and clapboard barns, and it reads right on modern farmhouse, cottage and Craftsman homes. Ours are solid wood, mortise-and-tenon at the battens, with a beaded or square board edge and a straight, arched or Z-brace pattern.

Species and Finish

Western Red Cedar and Cypress are the traditional farmhouse choices — light, rot-resistant and happy with paint or stain; Mahogany, Spanish Cedar and White Oak for a heavier, stain-grade shutter. Order unfinished, primed, or painted in any color; black and white are the most common.

Sizing

Farmhouse shutters are usually hung as a pair, each half the window width so the pair closes over the glass, and the full height of the window casing. Enter your window opening in the designer above; the price is per panel.
