The exterior window shutters in our Colonial Collection are a grouping of elegantly styled flat paneled shutters. Each window shutter can be ordered in the exact size and proportion for its application, and these shutters are historically accurate both in terms of their construction and design. Prominent in Early America, these shutters were used for both decoration and defense (from the weather of course, but also from robbers, British and the Indians). Simply styled and extremely sturdy, this type of window shutter is appropriate on Colonial, Georgian and Federal styles of architecture. Each window shutter is configured with standard flat panels, 1/2" thick, but can be ordered with panels up to a musket ball stopping 1 3/8" inch. The frame thickness for the exterior window shutter configuration is 1 5/16, but these can also be ordered in interior window shutter configurations at a wide range of flat panel thickness, and frame thickness. Each flat panel is glued, not with a butt glue joint, but with a 3 tongued interlocking spline joint which doubles the strength of the panels at the joints. Our Colonial shutters are fully operational, but can also be used as decorative window shutters -- check out our line of complimentary shutter hardware. |
