Estate Millwork’s tips on choosing and measuring house shutters

Explore the Estate Millwork collection of flat-panel shutters. House Shutters

We're available online or by phone at 1.866.322.0040 to answer all customer questions about our house shutters.

You.ve already decided to purchase shutters for your house or condominium. Now comes the fun part . choosing the style of house shutters you prefer . and the tough part, measuring your windows for best fit.

Estate Millwork sells many varieties of shutters for your house. The style you choose should be influenced by a combination of factors:

1. The architectural style of your house - Do you live in a sprawling English Tudor or a tall-and-slim urban Victorian? Will you be installing shutters on a house in New England or in the muggy Southwest?

Certain shutter styles suit certain house styles better than others. For example, if your home is a Tudor in the Northeast, it will look best with panel house shutters, such as raised panel or board-and-batten shutters. However, if your home is a modern stucco creation in the Southeast, it will be best complemented by Bermuda (Bahama) shutters.

2. The function of your shutters - Are you primarily installing shutters on your house because you want to save money on your heating and cooling bills? If so, select shutters that can be opened and closed rather than fixed shutter styles.

However, if you.re selecting house shutters primarily for protection from hurricanes or tropical storms, consider Bermuda shutters or another top-hinged style. Our plantation shutters also fare well on houses in hurricane and tropical storm belts.

3. The prevailing house styles in your neighborhood - If you.re still not sure which shutters suit your house best, take a tip from us . and take a stroll down the block. Your neighbors. houses will offer you clues for selecting complementary house shutters. If most of the houses on your block have louvered shutters, stick to louvered shutters for your house. If the prevailing shutter style is board-and-batten, strongly consider ordering board-and-batten shutters.

Why are we suggesting you copy your neighbors? It.s all about resale value. If your house is outfitted with shutters . or any other d cor . that doesn.t fit your neighborhood, it will stick out, and not in a flattering way. Buyers will be turned off when they view the .strange. house on the block. Choosing the wrong shutters can seriously lower the resale value of your house.

Measuring shutters for your house

Measuring your house for shutters might seem daunting at first, but it’s actually very simple. Follow Estate Millwork’s handy measuring guide and you’ll discover the perfect fit:

1. House shutter width: Place your tape measure from the left side of your window at the edge to the right side of your window at the edge. Note and record the measurement to the nearest one-eighth inch.

Repeat this measurement several times at different heights across the window, and record the smallest of the measurements. This measurement is the width of your house shutters. If you want operable house shutters, subtract one-half inch from the final measurements.

2. House shutter height: Place your tape measure from the inner edge of the bottom-most part of the window (called the sill) to the highest point of the window. Note and record the measurement to the nearest one-eighth inch.

Repeat this measurement process, and record the smallest measurement. Subtract one-quarter inch from the final height measurement if you’re ordering operable house shutters.
