Flat-panel Boston Shutters: a stylish part of Boston.s legacy
To walk through Boston’s historic Beacon Hill neighborhood is to be taken back to the earliest days of our country. Once an estate of the first European to settle in the area, William Blaxton, it is now a highly-desirable Boston neighborhood. And it's full of Federal-style row houses resplendent in their symmetrical flat-panel shutters; the luxurious Greek Revival townhouses of Louisburg Square adorned with prim and proper louvered shutters; the cobblestone “most picturesque in America” Acorn Street overlooked by fine plantation shutters…
Clearly, the panel shutter is an important stylistic landmark of the Boston aesthetic.
Panel shutters are a beautiful and functional addition to the Boston home. Drawn shut, panel shutters can keep a room cool in the summer – or, in a fierce winter, they can help keep precious warm air in. Our precision machining techniques mean that homeowners will notice the difference in their energy bills – no gaps means no leakage! We offer many varieties of panel shutters to meet your exterior shutter needs:
- Traditional Boston board-and-batten shutters with stylish grooving and decorative cove;
- Raised-panel shutters with mortise-and-tenon joined panels for the highest strength;
- Flat-panel shutters for a traditional Boston look;
- Custom shutters of any arrangement of panels and louvers, detailed radius work, and custom cutouts to meet your exact specifications.

Nor.easter? Ne.er fear! Peace of mind comes free with board-and-batten shutters
Wood shutters are the best choice in exterior shutters when extreme climate variation is a factor. The proximity of the Atlantic Ocean can leave Boston blustery with wind, covered in snow, pounded with hail, drenched in monsoon-like rain… and then there’s still the heat of summer to deal with!
Trusting shoddy PVC or faux-wood exterior shutters to the elements is a risky gamble that isn’t exactly visually appealing, either. Our high-quality hardwoods weather the elements to last for years, whereas in a few years inferior faux-wood exterior shutters will have “weathered” their way to the dumpster. This makes our custom shutters the wise choice for years to come.
We don't just build our shutters to last using the finest craftsmanship and sturdy joinery techniques – we've also optimized our factory to operate in an environmentally conscious fashion. As a green company, we are focused on sustainability, eliminating waste, and preserving our Earth for future generations. To do this, we harvest most of wood locally through sustainable forestry -- and everything we don’t harvest ourselves is sourced through sustainable timber suppliers.
We mill all timber in house to eliminate waste, using up to 97% of the timber in product. Compare this to the up to 40% waste deemed “acceptable” in most other mills! Our scraps and sawdust are used both to heat the factory during the winter and as animal bedding and fertilizer in local farms. By maintaining close relationships with our community and our planet, we at Estate Millwork are able to provide you with the highest quality wood shutters and the peace of mind that your exterior shutters have made a minimal impact on the Earth that grew them.
